Compass and Light
Addiction is a complex illness characterized by an intense and uncontrollable obsession that persists even in the face of devastating consequences. Because addiction has so many dimensions and disrupts so many aspects of an individual’s life, recovery is not simple. The ultimate goal is to sustain a daily abstinence and therefore a new design for living.
I remember that moment of surrender, finally I ceased fighting this brutal illness, I slumped to my knees. I was mentally, physically and spiritually destitute, with all my bridges burned I sobbed uncontrollably, it was at this precise moment I spoke four simple although powerful words “God please help me”. This was the instant my spirit changed.
We are at the precipice and through sheer desperation we ask for help with the most simplest words and a light appears.. as if from nothing we see our future and it is filled with hope. A new design for living ensued and millions are in recovery from a once seemingly hopeless state of mind and being. Where once was a deep abyss now stands a beacon. A pathway stretches out in front of us and all we need do is follow those who have built it. They enlighten us and direct our thinking toward love, tolerance and compassion for all.
